DJ Fresh breaks his silence over the death of his ex-wife of 20 years, Thabiso Sikwane.
The death of the seasoned radio broadcaster, whose voice featured on radio stations like Voice of Soweto, SAfm, PowerFM, and KayaFM959, was announced by the family on Saturday, 31 August, in a media statement.
Since then, messages of tribute have continued to flood social media. Among those who broke their silence was Thato Sikwane, popularly known as DJ Fresh.
In an almost two-minute video, DJ Fresh delved into the details surrounding Thabiso’s cause of death.
He began his video by saying: “I’m not going to make a sombre video because that is not what Thabiso would expect of me or anyone else.
“This video is out of necessity because of the wild times we live in with disinformation and fake news and all the wild stuff that gets posted out there,” he said.
Fresh went on to confirm that Thabiso died in the morning on Saturday at around 6:30, further revealing the circumstances that led to her death.
“We are told that it could have been a cardiac event, but what would have caused it has not been ascertained. So we await the post-mortem that will give everyone clarity,” he said.
Fresh added that Thabiso’s death was sudden and had caught everyone by surprise.
“It does not make sense to anyone, how this could happen out of the blue,” he siad.
Reflecting on the path that now lies ahead for himself, Fresh said one of their eldest sons, Thato Sikwane Junior, told him to honour their mom in all the gig bookings because that is what Thabiso would have wanted.
“Just like she did when Wandy, our fifteen-year-old, was born. Wandy arrived a tad early, and I had a booking in Durban. I remember being busy trying to cancel that booking, and in between that delivery, [Thabiso] said to me that when this baby pops today, you will honour your bookings.
“So YBF [Thato Sikwane Jr] is now on some make sure you honour mom, make sure you represent her but please don’t cancel the bookings. I am in two minds about it,” he said.
Fresh ended his video letting out a heavy sigh and said: “But ja, she really is gone.”
Thabiso also featured on episode 154 of WAW! What A Week with DJ Fresh podcast, where they held candid conversations, some of which saw Thabiso get emotional and cry.
That moment was seen when a voice clip from her mother was played, wherein she reflected on Thabiso’s growth in her life and the significant role she played in her family.
According to both DJ Fresh and Thabiso, this was the first time they had sat down together to interview each other, as they had never done so in their combined 50 years of broadcasting.
